Puerto Rican soprano Samarie Alicea has been hailed by The New York Times for her "bright-voiced and endearing soprano".
Samarie made her New York City Opera role debut as Aire in Literes’ spanish baroque opera Los Elementos. She made her Carnegie Hall debut in 2024 singing the Soprano Soloist in Bach’s Magnificat and Vivaldi’s Magnificat.
Engagements for 2024 include a tour in Malta and Turkey with luzAzul, an immersive operatic experience for very young audiences ages 0-2 and their caregivers that premiered in June, 2023 at Chelsea Factory in New York City.
Recently Samarie has been seen in concerts promoting Latin American repertoire with Opera Hispánica in New York City.
In Spring 2023 Samarie was part of Heartbeat Opera’s production of Lady M. Also sang as Frasquita in Carmen at the Axelrod Performing Arts Center and as Zerlina in Don Giovanni with Heartbeat Opera in New York City.
In 2019 she joined Heartbeat Opera’s remount of Don Giovanni as Zerlina at the Chamber Music Northwest in Portland, Oregon. With New York City Opera, Samarie sang the role of the Statue in Rameau's Pygmalion and returned as Aire in the spanish baroque opera Los Elementos at both the New York's Couture Fashion Week with NYCO & Opera Carolina's Opera Recycles and for the NYCO’s Park Series at Bryant Park.
The 2017-2018 season included her return Off-Broadway reprising the role of Susana in Figaro 90210! and her soloist debut with the New York City Opera as Aire in Antonio de Literes' Los Elementos. Critics praised her Aire performance as a "soprano like a warm breeze, easily floating, with a consistent caramel tone, and she is irrepressibly sunny presence on the stage". Season also included the role of Clorinda in La Cenerentola as part of NYCO's Park Series at Bryant Park, New York.
Critics hailed her Off-Broadway Susana performance as "slyly alluring" and as "a very strong actress delivering her entertaining comedy skills". She was part of New York City Opera's production of Candide directed by Hal Prince. She has also been part of New York City Opera's last productions of María de Buenos Aires at Le Poisson Rouge, L’Amore dei Tre Re, Aleko / Pagliacci and Florencia en el Amazonas at the Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Rose Theater. Samarie also performed as Susanna in Le nozze di Figaro with Long Island Opera and as Servilia in La Clemenza di Tito with dell’Arte Opera Ensemble in New York City.
She was a winner of the Puerto Rico District for the Metropolitan Opera National Auditions as well as the Osgood/dell’Arte Opera Ensemble competition in New York City. Credits in partial operatic roles include Rosina in Il Barbiere di Siviglia, title role in Semiramide, Adina in L’elisir d’amore, Elvira in I Puritani, María in West Side Story, Pamina in Die Zauberflöte, and Juliette in Roméo et Juliette.
She has participated with the International Vocal Arts Institute in New York City, Virginia and Tel Aviv, Israel and with the International Institute of Vocal Arts in Chiary, Italy. Alicea received her Master of Music in Voice Performance degree at CUNY-Brooklyn College and her Bachelor’s degree from the Conservatory of Music of Puerto Rico.
